My predictions for the upcoming Apple Event

By Dave M. on August 31, 2010

I usually don’t buy into predicting Apple events since I don’t have a finger on the pulse of Apple, but I have been keeping up on all the rumors and such, so I thought I would put my 2¢ in on the prediction game.

Typically in September, Apple refreshes the iPod line of products.

So here is what I think we will see this event:

iPod touch:

  • Retina display
  • iPhone 4 form factor
  • Both rear and front-facing camera
  • FaceTime support
  • A4 processor
  • 512MB’s of execution RAM
  • Be offered in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions (Possibly not the 16GB version)

iPod Nano:

  • 2.2″ touch display (display that pictures have been floating around the Internet)
  • Will not support iOS, but a small subset that controls the iPod functions only
  • 8GB and 16GB versions
  • Priced less than $100 for 8GB version

No iPod shuffle, or at least no refresh

Apple TV:

  • Based on iOS using Magic Trackpad and/or iPhone/iPod touch/iPad for controlling it
  • $99 price
  • No HDD’s, Flash RAM based: 32GB and 64GB versions
  • Everything streams to it
  • Will not be available until future version of iOS (we haven’t heard anyone talking about code found in 4.1 that might support the refresh of an Apple TV)

iTunes:

  • Update to iTunes to support streaming media to Apple TV. Probably won’t be updated until Apple TV is ready.
  • Possible Television Series Rental
  • No music subscription service

Unlikely but still possible:

  • Ability to store your music (ripped) to the cloud (server farm being created in North Carolina) as well as pictures so that Apple TV can access them without the need for them to be stored on device
  • Any purchased music will already be accessible via cloud
  • Any purchased TV shows and Movies too

iPod Classic:

  • No change here, at least for this year.
  • If streaming/wireless iTunes is a hit, I suspect we will then see the demise of the iPod Classic or Hard Drive iPod

Well, there you have it. No matter what Apple announces tomorrow, I’ll be watching TWiT Live to find out and we will probably talk about it on the podcast.
