So, I’m reading Tumblr today when I stumbled across this post based on this post based on this post.
(I think I got all the credits right on that one.)
I’ve been running Shaun Inman’s Fever newsreader for almost a year now and I love it. I agree with most of the sentiments regarding using it on a mobile platform. Fever’s interface on the iPhone can be frustrating and I ditched it for Reeder shortly after Dave first brought it to my attention. I also use Reeder on the iPad. Still, when I get busy and need to quickly catch up on the news, nothing beats Fever.
I don’t understand the complaints about Fever’s speed. I’m running it on an old Dell connected to my DSL line and have never had speed issues, even from the iPhone. But the real problem I have is with SmokingApple’s comment:
Shaun Inman has a real “take it or leave” attitude in regards to his customers.
Now Shaun might not be big on the mobile platform. I don’t know. I’ve never talked with him regarding this issue. I can, however, state unequivocally that any “take it or leave it attitude” that Shaun might have does not extend to customer service.
Last week, I logged into my Fever installation and noticed that an upgrade was available. When I tried to apply the upgrade, I received a licensing-related error message. I emailed Shaun about it and, it being late Saturday evening, I pretty much forgot about it. Shaun responded first thing Monday morning asking about my configuration. Over the next couple of days, we exchanged email. In the end, Shaun did everything other than login to my Linux server. He reviewed my phpinfo() output, he logged into my Fever installation and, lastly, he performed the upgrade himself.
That, my friends, is service. And if that qualifies as “take it or leave it,” sign me up.
