The Wall Street Journal has an article that talks about Apple looking into issues with iOS 4 and the iPhone 3G. There are a lot of users complaining that their iPhone 3G’s went from being a dream to use to being a nightmare ever since upgrading to iOS 4.
I can state from experience that there is a definite change in the performance of the iPhone 3G after installing iOS 4. Apps that Apple wrote themselves: Mail, Settings, Mobile Safari, and even Clock take several seconds longer just to load than with iOS 3.x. You shouldn’t have to wait 20-30 seconds just for Settings to give you the first list of settings (not the list of Apps that have settings) to appear.
There are also complaints of the phone drains the battery quicker as well as becoming excessively hot.
There is a video that has been floating around on the iPhone blogs that pretty much says it all:
I can’t say that my iPhone 3G was acting like that. I didn’t see issues where I couldn’t answer the phone. However, the unresponsive behavior was definitely an issue for me.
Hopefully, Apple will fine-tune iOS 4 for the iPhone 3G and make it a useable OS for that platform.
On the other hand, I have seen ads for the 3GS for under $50! If you have a 3G and don’t want to spend the $199 to $299 for the iPhone 4, the $49 iPhone 3GS is a great price and the 3GS is a great speedy phone. To be fair, that $49 iPhone is referbished. Still…

The 16GB iPhone 4 is $199. The 32GB is $299.
Updated! Thanks for catching that!
