iPad user demographic breakdown

iPad

AppAdvice.com has an article about a Yahoo! User Analysis article, ain’t the Internet grand!

The Yahoo! article describes a bunch of demographics and how the iPad fits into them. What I found rather interesting was the rather even distribution of US sales over the age groups selected. Granted, the ?20 age group was smaller, but the rest were pretty even:

Now to be fair, the 35-44 age group is bigger than any of the other groups, but the other 4 groups; 21-29, 30-34, 45-54 and 55+ all are within a few percent of each other.

What would be more interesting would be to see computer purchases over the same demographics compared to those of the iPad. I suspect that the higher age groups would have much smaller percentages and that the graph would be weighted more heavily in the lower age groups. Also, the ?20 group would have a much larger percentage than 8% or 5%.

I think those figures are quite natural, nothing surprising in them. People from the 35–44 age group have mostly already established themselves, they are in the prime of life, they are still interested in everything new, and they can afford such devices more easily. And I guess most of the iPad owners are male…

Yeah, I guess the figures are not that surprising. However, I didn't expect the other demographics to be as high as they were. I really expected the 35-44 range to be much bigger and the others smaller.

Surprisingly, the distro of men to women is about 50/50. The “early adapters” were more men to women and that's not really surprising.

This spread looks about right to me. The only thing I find surprising is that the 55+ demographic is not bigger. I'd have guessed something closer to 17-20%, based on what I've seen (20% is probably way too high). Of course, statistics are funny that way. Like Laureen, the 35-44 age group is not surprising. 45-54, most of the people in this age group are on the cusp of technology and looking for something simpler, and they have more expendable income. While the 21-29 don't have that much mad money, the number was lower than I'd have expected.

I don't understand the title of the graph, though. What is International Y! ? Is that a cult? ARE WE DEALING WITH A CULT?

    j/k
