So now that Apple has created an Extension API to Safari, there are tons of extensions being created by very talented folks out there in the Internets.
From what I have heard/read, Apple wants to create a curated store/collection of these extensions. Hopefully, this doesn’t mean an App Store like approval process since that could put a big ugly foot into something that can be quite wonderful.
Some kind of list of extensions where developers can store their work is really required so that Safari can check to see if the extensions have been updated and download the updates like Firefox and other browsers do.
However, until Apple does this, a nice person by the name of Jonas Wisser has graciously created a Tumblr site called Safari Extensions where Safari Extension developers can post links to their extension sites.
I’ve been installing extensions ever since I found out that Safari supports them now and I have to say that so far, Safari has held up wonderfully. Meaning, I have over 40 extensions installed and Safari seems to be working as fast as it did before I installed all the extensions.
As you can see by the above image, there are quite a few extensions that add buttons to the Safari Toolbar. There are also a bunch of extensions that reformat sites like Google Reader:
This specific extension: Google Reader Styles, is a great way to view Google Reader. It pretty much does what GreaseKit used to do for Safari and GreaseMonkey does for Firefox.
I just can’t get over how well Apple does things. They look at what other developers/companies do and then do them right. iOS 4 and multitasking, iPhone and cell phones, and now browser extensions.
